Capitol Hoops Press
Bethesda , MD -- Home of the Georgetown Prep Little Hoyas
The season opener between Bishop McNamara and Georgetown Prep was a roller
coaster ride from start to finish. The perennial matchup between the WCAC
and the IAC showcased 8 lead changes before the Mustangs put the Little
Hoyas away 64-62.
Senior guard Rashad Whack who has already verbally committed to George Mason
University , came out blazing hot in the first quarter knocking down two 3pt
shots in the games first 3 minutes. Sophomore guard Nat Eggleston kept the
Little Hoyas within striking distance scoring from long distance before the
first quarter ended with the Mustangs ahead 15-13.
Junior guard Markel Starks (15pts) (committed to Georgetown) picked up from
a rocky start to begin the 2nd quarter displaying his basketball IQ ,
finding open teammate Sr. Robert Olsen (15pts) who connected from deep
putting Prep on top 25-19. As Whack (McNamara) sat the last three minutes of
the 1st half with two fouls , Starks began to control the tempo and
Georgetown Prep's confidence skyrocketed going into half-time 33-27 and with
plenty of momentum.
The momentum wouldn't last long as McNamara guard Brian Washington stole an
errand pass from Sr. Brian Mulquin and finished on the go ahead layup to
begin the second half. Whack caught fire again scoring his team's next eight
points as McNamara climbed back on top 40-36 after a 13-3 run for the
Mustangs.
Senior center Talib Zanna (Pittsburgh University) was one of the Mustangs
who stepped up big , knocking down four very important free throws with 4
minutes remaining as McNamara would not look back from that point on. Zanna
came to play on the offensive side scoring on a barage of spin moves , and
defensively coming up with 5 blocks. " I came out strong and got in foul
trouble , but as a team we stepped up tonight an got a big win " , added a
happy Whack who finished with a game high 23 points on 8-10 shooting.
Bishop McNamara head coach Marty Keithline gets the win to open the
2008-2009 high school basketball season in which the Mustangs have been
nationally ranked. They improve to 1-0 and will face off against St. Frances
Academy this Saturday in the DTLR High School Festival at Wise.
