The #8 Gonzaga Purple Eagles attempted 21 Free Throw's last night , out of
those they missed not a single one in a great team effort upsetting #2
Dematha 86-76 before a sold-out gymnasium in NW Washington , DC. The fact
that Gonzaga failed to miss a FT , reveals signs of a well coached team on a
mission.
A pair of Zag junior's in Tyler Thornton and Cedrick Lindsay and senior Ian
Hummer combined for 67 points in the win over WCAC league rival Dematha
earning them the " Big Three" title. "Even though I scored a career high , I
could have only had 10 points and still been happy to get a win against
Dematha" smiled Hummer who led all scorers with 32 points.
Dematha came out strong in the first half , junior Josh Selby (15pts) found
junior Victor Oladipo (10pts) for back to back baskets as the Stags closed
out the intermission with a 33-28 lead. However the bad blood between
conference rivals was evident , and it was clear that an all out war was the
only option for both clubs.
Gonzaga came out aggressive in the 2nd half as junior Tyler Thornton (
verbally committed to Duke ) pulled up on consecutive plays knocking down a
pair of jump shots giving the Purple Eagle a 56-50 advantage late in the 3rd
quarter.
"We knew if we got Ian the ball in the right spots , that he would make
plays" acknowledged Thornton who spoke of teammate Hummer who was clutch
when the Zags needed him most. Thornton found Hummer in transition who put
down a big time dunk sending the Gonzaga Faithful in a frenzy stretching the
lead to 12 points with less than three minutes to play in the game. The Zags
would hold on to win 86-76 and reclaim the top spot in the competitive WCAC
conference in the process.
Dematha with their first loss in league play drops to 15-2 on the season ,
while Gonzaga wins their ninth straight game improving to 16-2 overall.
